Not long now. The Christmas Juggernaut is up to speed, rushing ever closer and threatening to obliterate all with un-needed gifts, cheap perfume at extortionate prices, and enough calories to feed the world. You can sit down with a clear conscience (you did watch ‘Children in Need, did you not?) and forget all about those with nothing, or less.
I was listening to the radio, today. They talked about providing beds for the lost and the homeless. The temperature had dropped below zero, so they had provided more beds for the needy. The have my whole-hearted support. Just try dossing outdoors, in whatever nook you can find, with frost on the ground and hunger in your heart. They used a trendy term, but in a way that I have never heard before. ‘Silver Surfers’. People, old or aged beyond their time. Bunking up in some room for a night, with some friend or slight acquaintance. Moving on the next day, to some other place. A floor, a couch, or if fortunate, a bed. Not quite the Un-dead but neither one of the living. Never staying too long, lest it becomes a home and an obligation.
Not caring nor cared for. And not part of a comfortable Christmas.
So, as the 25th draws closer, and you are planning your indulgences and festivities, make a point of reading the menu before you chose your Yuletide feast.
