After two days on the road in our Nissan Oldtimer (nee Altima), we arrived at Lake Harmony, Pennsylvania. The snow was starting to accumulate, it was about 9 pm, and we had to find out where to book in for our week’s timeshare. The first hold-up was the toll-gate, where we had to pay $1 to proceed to the book-in desk at the main complex. Just try to drive up very close to a window when you are driving on the wrong side of the road, and you are tired. Not close enough. Have to open car door. No! Door locked. Wouldn’t unlock. Switch off ignition. Then open door. Get out. Pay the man. Get in. Try to wind up window as snow swirls in. Switch on ignition. Wind down back window. Wind up back window. Wind up front window. Gesticulate to impatient driver behind. Wind down front window. Try to reach proferred receipt. Swear profusely! Try to open door. Switch off ignition … etc. etc. Getting really fond of Nissan Motor Company. Not!
Eventually, we were booked in, and directed to our abode for the next week.
Typical 2 story wooden built ‘town house’ timeshare. Haul all the baggage up a flight of stairs. Open door, then haul it all up (or down) another flight of stairs. I have seen this design all over the USA. Dumb as it comes. The timeshare had lots of room, and lots of bathrooms. Even a sauna. A bit tatty, and in need of overhaul, but acceptable. And it had a gas fire. So OK. Or it was after we phoned up reception to send someone to fix it. And tell us how to operate the TV. A booklet on the place would have been handy!
We were tired. We just went to bed as soon as we stopped shifting baggage. We were heading off to New York the next morning (just over 100 miles – a quickie!) for a couple of days. New York on the weekend before Christmas. Exciting! A dream of a lifetime. The Empire State Building. Central Park. Broadway. Shopping at Macy’s – the World’s Largest Department Store.
