Scottish values? There are plenty of them around.
To sit in a Afro-Caribbean Chapel in the roughest part of an English town, listening to the choir singing negro spirituals, and enjoying the company.
To walk in the desert and share water with another. And wait with respect, while he prays to his God.
Sitting in a small boat in a Georgia swamp, listening to your guide talking about all the Hollywood films that were shot there. And remembering the films.
Living in England and being at home. And thinking of your birthplace while you write.
Knowing that you were right for your time, and knowing that the young are right for their time.
Never being ashamed of who you are, and never being ashamed of who anybody else is.
Strangely enough, not one of the above is inherently Scottish. But if you can believe in the above, then you can be proud to be Scottish. No matter where you come from.
