Is This the Way?

RoadTripUSA7

Do you actually NEED a clue for this one? From the film. The city we have just visited.

The next tune applies if we had come down the Mother Road from Chicago. But, to be strictly accurate, the person featured in the tune never managed to get there The higher-pitched version.

We wandered off and on Interstate 40. Sometimes the freeway, sometimes the 2-lane blacktop. The Museum in Clinton was an absolute must. Been there, got the t-shirt. Only one song could possibly fit. Done by just about everybody, but I’ve gone for a Royal singer.

The next song is typical of many of the songs in the USA. Someone comes up with a classic song – great tune, snappy lyrics – but the place name is not quite right. Washita county – doesn’t quite trip off the tongue, does it? So pick a place that sounds better. Bit like Clarksville, as previously mentioned.town Up a pole with a Scots-sounding singer.

The Sat-Nav was having an easy time. We could have done the navigating ourself. Just drive in a straight line. Considering where we are going, this is a relevant question. He was a Fitzgerald, originally.

An impromptu stop at the town of McLean. Visit the Barb Wire Museum. More fun and more variety than you would believe from the name. And all for free in a former bra factory! Honest! The staff in the local diner were brilliant. Friendly, talkative. Real America. I think that they liked us, too.
The film ‘Cars’ was based on McLean and many a similar town that the Interstate left behind. Some buildings left to die – some fresh and vital.

The last part of the day’s run was through Texas. Across the Llanos Estacudos – the Staked Plain. Land so featureless, so flat, that every horizon was visible. We had a Sat-Nav (and a concrete freeway to follow. Without them, the pioneers could only drive in markers to ensure that they did not walk around in circles.
“Oh look! It’s a tree!”
“Oh look! It’s another tree!”
“I spy with my little eye …”
It was a relief to arrive in Amarillo.

Clinton and McLean. Not a double act but two very different museums. After all, all the best guide books prattle on about museums! These are better than most.
